Danqing Shen
Founder

Danqing Shen graduated from the prestigious Nan Jing Art Institute in China, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, and received her Masters of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from California State University, Long Beach. Danqing is passionate about fostering freedom of expression by experimenting with a diverse range of art mediums, allowing every child to explore their own creativity. She believes in nurturing innovation within every child, seeing the need especially within her own Chinese and Asian communities, and educates children to not just copy ideas or images, but to become deep and critical thinkers that use their hands and skills to connect with tangible materials and environments. Danqing opened up her 1st art studio, “Little Artist Lab”, using the term “Lab” to convey what a uniquely creative and experimental space for art making it can be. Within 2 years the Lab has grown and expanded to a 2nd studio, “The Artist Lab”, a refined creative space where youth, teens, and adult artists can come together through the arts. Her dreams continue to come to live as she develops unique coursework and programs, partnering with professional artists that share her vision for the future.

Sophia Hu
Part Owner

Sophia Hu graduated from the distinguished Shanghai Normal University, with an Emphasis in Education. She accepted a position to teach Chinese at a primary school in Shanghai’s Luwen District, imparting knowledge to youth for over 4 years. After moving to the United States to start a family and support her husband’s company, she has been vehement to once again share her gifts by providing a unique afterschool experience above and beyond what is offered in the community. Sophia aspires to make Lifelong Learners of all students, and foster their critical thinking, creativity, and curiosity about the world they live in.

Alysse Filipek
Operational Manager

Alysse Filipek is an Orange County native, and studied at the The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, receiving her BFA in Ceramics and Designed Objects. She has a wide range of skills in 3D sculptural mediums, from metals to slip casting, and her work is heavily influenced by narrative and everyday interactions, informed by her passion of lyrical music and creative writing. Alysse has worked with youth of all age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds, and is passionate in preparing them to see the world both creatively and critically.

Ly Hoàng-Schmidt

Drawing & Painting Program Developer

Ly Hoàng-Schmidt is a Vietnamese American artist, “artivist”/activist, and art educator. She graduated from UC Berkeley with emphasis in Art Practice and Ethnic Studies, and pursued her Teaching Credential from National University. Her paintings are both political and spiritual, inspired by her passions for poetry, memory, family, world peace, and the global community.  They are informed by global movements for social justice and economic & racial equality. Ly has a decade of experience working with youth of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and her passion is bringing art to underserved communities. She developed the Drawing & Painting Fine Art Programs at The Artist Lab branched off from Little Artist Lab, advancing the content and making Fine Art education more accessible to more youths.  Through the creative fine arts, Ly connects children and bridges communities through creative expression. She hopes that through the universal language of Art, messages of beauty, hope, and love will live on in our future generations. In her free time, Ly loves to paint, write, travel, create new project ideas, go to the beach, give back to the community, and spend time with her husband and family.

Ruoyi Shi
Ceramics Instructor

Ruoyi Shi is an interdisciplinary artist working with objects, writings, performances, and video installations. Inspired by folklore, oral history, mythology, and personal experiences, she combines traditional storytelling and modern perspectives to construct her own poetic narratives.

Ruoyi received her undergraduate degree from the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing, China (Known as CAFA), where she studied sculpture and had experience working with various kinds of mediums to create unique pieces. Ruoyi is a recent graduate from CalArts MFA program in 2021. She worked as a teaching assistant for the BFA art foundation class and served as a mentor for community art programs helping numerous children find their artistic paths.

Fine Art Instructor

Suzana Halder is a Bengali American artist, graduating from Pacific Union College with a BA in English and a Teaching Credential in Secondary English. Since she was a child, she has had a huge passion for the arts. Starting off with a strong emphasis on graphite and charcoal portraits, she has worked her way through acrylics, watercolor, and most recently oils. She strives to keep learning as much as she can and is eager to spread the joy of art to all of her students.

Sean Kelly is a sculptor from Los Angeles County. He graduated in 2018 from California State University, Los Angeles with an MFA in Studio Art. During his graduate program he honed his craft in ceramic sculpture, focusing on the creation of organic objects steeped in storytelling and mythology. His art is informed by spirituality, machines, and the wilderness of California. Sean has exhibited his ceramic sculptures at the American Museum of Ceramic Art, The Luckman Gallery, and Maiden LA, in conjunction with the The Hammer Museum. In addition to being an artist, Sean has a passion for teaching and inspiring students of all ages to produce engaging and meaningful sculptures.

Sofia Venegas graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Psychology and Art. Growing up in Maryland, Sofia began painting plain air scenes around the eastern shore, during which she found a love for oil paint along with drawing, and printmaking. After moving to California, she began to use more colors and incorporated digital renders into her painting process to make more complex compositions. Sofia aspires to become an art therapist to help children express themselves through creative processes, and looks forward to passing on her excitement and passion for art.

Mylinh Nguyen graduated with a BFA in Illustration from California State University Long Beach. Ever since she was a child, creating has been a great love of hers. While Mylinh’s recent practices have now shifted towards 3D Design, she is still passionate by utilizing her fundamental skills in Painting and Drawing. The quality of all of her work is intricate, professional, & neat, and she strives to impart these traits with all of her students.

Ana Sanchez is a representational artist currently living and working in Southern California. After moving to Los Angeles, California in 2012, Ana explored different creative outlets until deciding to get her BFA at Laguna College of Art and Design, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2018 with a Drawing and Painting major and Art History minor. Her multidisciplinary and diverse background has helped her combine different elements of literature and philosophy into her artistic work, which consists on modern portraits depicted in classical settings, with high symbolic content. As an instructor, Ana hopes to make art and creativity accessible and enjoyable to a diverse group of student

Elaine Painter obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma City in 2019 and became a certified teacher. She is tested and certified to teach multiple subjects to students ranging from Kindergarten to eighth grade. She has taught one year of fifth grade English and Science while also tutoring students on an individual level after school. Her love for teaching runs extremely deep and she looks forward to helping students succeed for many years to come.

Stephanie Diamond attended Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, GA where she received her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and obtained her Master’s Degree in Adolescent Education and Social Studies. There, she also became an Education Specialist in Secondary Education as well as a Doctor of Education in Teaching and Learning in Social Studies in Education. Stephanie has been a dedicated teacher for 18 years. She has had experience with teaching privately as well as in several public schools, having worked with students from K-8th grade. Stephanie also has experience in creating lesson plans and curriculum. Her passion for working with children has helped her continue her teaching career throughout the years. She maintains a well managed, safe, and open learning space for all her students.

Mary May is a highly qualified certified teacher with 6 years of teaching experience in both middle and high school. She has experience teaching full courses as well as exam prep. She can deliver creative and interactive math lessons to high school students that ensure consistent student engagement. In the 2018-2019 school year, she conducted an action research project designed to improve formative assessment and differentiated instruction. It resulted in 99% of students showing improvement. She earned a bachelor’s degree in science and math education from Western Kentucky University, and a master’s in secondary mathematics education from Western Governors University. Education is her passion and she strives to provide relevant and effective instruction for all learners.

Daniel Lipton is a second-grade teacher at the Coolidge Corner School, a public school in Brookline, Massachusetts. He has been teaching for over 18 years. In the summers, he runs a theater camp in Brookline, MA, Which he founded 15 years ago. He has two sons (ages 9 and 12) and has done private tutoring (in-person and online) for students in grades K-8. Daniel is certified as a math specialist, reading specialist, classroom teacher, and principal/vice principal. He received a Master’s Degree in Reading Education from Boston University and a Master’s in Education Administration from UMASS Lowell. His Bachelor’s Degree is in Elementary Education from Boston University. Daniel is passionate about integrating the arts into teaching and loves writing children’s musicals in his spare time!

Esther Choi is a graduating senior from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She majored in Biology and double minored in Anthropology and Society & Genetics. Although her main area of focus was in the life sciences, her education has lent her a strong foundation in Mathematics. Her background in Education consists of 4+ years of Tutoring experience in private and public institutions, internships with multiple local middle and high schools, as well as seminar-based instruction for Education through UCLA (Cal Teach). She hopes to use her unique background to teach Math and Science in engaging and fun ways for students!

Leslie Nunez is a student at LACC majoring in art and minoring in history. She has over 7 years of experience teaching and tutoring elementary age students.
